Staff Spotlight: Tony Tang

Tony Tang has been the backbone of Camp Katy for the past four summers.  Helping to develop courses and day to day camp management has been his primary function.  This summer Tony will be the lead instructor for all of our 3D Game Design courses.

Tony’s family is from China but he grew up in Spain and the United States.  He attended USC at fifteen and graduated with dual major in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering.  Tony was on the corporate fast track with companies such as Synopsys, Pacific Telesis, Southwestern Bell and Bank of America.  After realizing he wanted more than 100+ hours per week at a desk, Tony began traveling the world.  He is both an accomplished Flamenco singer and chef.

Tony landed in Katy after meeting Amber while passing through town with a Flamenco dance company.  His name has since been synonymous with The Core, our PC gameroom operated throughout the school year.  Tony is a natural people person and continues to surprise us with his knowledge and experience.  He speaks Spanish, English and Cantonese Chinese fluently.  Some conversation ability with French and German.

If you’re at Camp Katy this week, make sure to ask Tony to show off his favorite dance moves!

DROP OFF & PICK UP

We have a carpool line setup for the busier drop off and pick up times.  If you will be coming outside the times listed below, please check-in/out at the front counter.  A staff member will bring your child to you.

MORNINGS: 7am to 7:30am & 8:15am to 8:45am                                 AFTERNOONS: 4pm to 4:45pm

TIP: To avoid the traffic at I-10 and 99, you can take Kingsland west, turn north (right) on Cobia and turn east (right) on W Fernhurst.  This will take you around the shopping center and we will be on the right after you pass the apartments on Fernhurst.  Camp Katy is the only business open at 7am so we should be easy to spot the first day.

BREAKFAST, LUNCHES & SNACKS

You can either bring lunch and/or snacks for your camper OR:

LUNCH: Our lunch is catered daily by local eateries and has to be ordered for the entire week.  We cannot accept orders for individual lunches.  There is a vegetarian and healthy option each day. Choices will rotate to keep it interesting for the kids and include such items as cheeseburger, chicken tenders, pizza, quesadilla, sandwich (and more) with a side of french fries, chips or mixed veggies.  Lunch also includes a soda or water.  If you plan on picking your child up for lunch, please let the instructor know on drop-off.  You will need to check your child in/out at the front counter.

Note: If you did not select the weekly lunch option when you registered and would like to do so now, click visit www.CampKaty.com and click ‘My Account’ in the top right hand corner of the page. After you have signed in, go to your Account Details page. Under “Current Reservations” on the right hand side, find the session you would like to add lunch to and click View. Under Reservation Items on the bottom left you will see an OPTIONS entry. Click Edit, next. The Lunch Account option is on the 2nd page or our session options menu.

SNACKS: Our snack bar is open during breaks, lunch time and before/after class time.  Most snacks/drinks are $1 and some are up to $2.50.  We don’t handle cash from our students but you can add money to your camper‘s store account. To find out how to add money to your child’s store, click here.

BASIC CLASS INFO

TIMES: Classes run Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm.  Please have your camper arrive no later than 8:45 so we can start promptly.  Our camp is open from 7am to 6pm to accommodate working parents or to give campers time to goof off with their new friends.  There is not an extra charge to come early or stay late.

TYPICAL DAY: Our classes are divided into three morning and three afternoon sessions with lunch between them.  Each session is one hour and includes a fifteen minute break.  Mornings are usually dedicated to new content/principles while our afternoons are spent on hands-on projects.  Each class will utilize several instructors and have at least one teaching assistant.  This will give each of our students plenty of one-on-one instruction.

PARENT VISITS: While you are welcome at our camp, we ask that you agree on a time with your child’s lead instructor to limit disruption.  If your child has special needs or you need to administer them medication, please speak to the camp director, Amber, on your first day and we will be happy to accommodate your needs.

STUDENT DATA: Your camper will bring home their data on Friday.  This will include any free software/tools used during class.  If you wish to purchase our class software to be used after camp at home, visit our camp store.  If given enough notice we will have the software available for take home on Friday as well.  Otherwise, we will call you when it comes in.

HARDWARE USED:  At the end of the summer, we offer all of our desktops and laptops at deep discounts to our students.  See the online camp store for details.

SOFTWARE USED: Some classes utilize specialized software that may be required to view, play, or edit their work when they get home. To purchase the software that students use in class see the online camp store or contact us for additional details.
